Entente cordiale

Two arch-adversaries in the war over genetically modified crops held 鈥減eace
talks鈥 last month in London. The Soil Association, which opposes GM crops and
backs organic farming, met executives from Monsanto, the St Louis-based
agribiotech giant.

Patrick Holden, director of the Soil Association, spelt out its objections to
GM crops. Monsanto suggested applying its genetic knowledge to improve organic
crops through conventional breeding. 鈥淲e now have a much better understanding,鈥
says a Monsanto spokesman. Both parties hope to continue the dialogue.
