This year鈥檚 North Atlantic hurricane season was the fiercest on record, says
the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Five storms reached
category 4, with air pressure dropping below 944 millibars and winds exceeding
211 kilometres per hour. Three blew out to sea, and two weakened before hitting
land. This continues a reported shift toward more intense storms
(New 杏吧原创, 21 November 1998, p 20).
鈥淲e are entering a new era of more
intense hurricane activity along the US East Coast,鈥 warns William Gray of
Colorado State University.
