Hitachi is to launch a 拢1500 camcorder that records on DVD-RAM discs,
the erasable version of DVD that is also used by Panasonic and Toshiba. The new
camcorder weighs just under 1 kilogram and uses 8-centimetre DVD-RAM discs in
cartridges, each with a data storage capacity of 1.46 gigabits per side. It can
record high-quality footage for one hour or standard quality for two hours.
Hitachi claims the discs can be taken out of the camera and played back in a
PC鈥檚 DVD-ROM drive. Alternatively, footage can be played through a TV set. In
August, the camera will be launched in Japan, and in Europe by Christmas.
