Booming TV

The British government has announced plans to auction off the 28 to
40-gigahertz radio band this summer, opening the way for hundreds of local TV
channels and superfast Internet connections via local masts and new rooftop
antennas. The frequencies might, for example, allow people to run neighbourhood
watch schemes using multi-channel CCTV. Friction is expected between existing
digital terrestrial broadcasters, who want the frequencies to expand coverage
into unserved areas, and Internet providers who would like to use the bandwidth
for e-commerce.
