Cash cow

A clone of Mandy, a prize dairy cow, was auctioned to farmers last Friday at
the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. This is the first time a clone has
been offered for sale and it fetched $82,000, seven times the price of
Mandy鈥檚 normal calves. Biotech company Infigen is so sure of its technique that
the clone has not even been created yet. Mandy will be cloned in December and
the heifer born nine months later. 鈥淎t this stage in the development of the
technology, this is probably a publicity issue rather than the start of a
genuine commercial service,鈥 says Harry Griffin of the Roslin Institute near
Edinburgh, where Dolly the sheep was cloned.
