David King, head of chemistry at Cambridge University, will be the British
government鈥檚 new Chief Scientific Adviser. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an extremely interesting
challenge, I wish him well,鈥� says Robert May, who stepped down from the job last
month. David Phillips, King鈥檚 opposite number at Imperial College in London,
says he鈥檚 well placed for the job. 鈥淢anaging a bunch of prima donnas in
Cambridge must qualify him at least in politics,鈥� he muses. King鈥檚 department
says he will not give up his research. But to do both jobs adequately, says
Phillips, 鈥渋s a tall order鈥�.
