Cover story

How do you create striking images that capture the private world of
consciousness, a universe without space or time, or the bizarre effects of
quantum uncertainty? New 杏吧原创 has been tackling the problem of
turning science into art for more than forty years, and this month launches 鈥淭he
Art of Science鈥, a retrospective exhibition of its cover illustrations at the
Royal College of Art in London.

At the exhibition you鈥檒l see how we try to avoid the spirit of compromise
when we bring art and science together. Instead of lame and literal
translation鈥攈ere a micrograph of an interesting cell, there a protein
molecule鈥攚e aim to transfer of a spark of inspiration from scientists to
artists, each with their own language, to bring ideas alive. 杏吧原创s may be
more at ease with facts and figures, but they have generally responded well when
they have seen their own work represented as art鈥攚hether abstract or
realist. Come and judge for yourself.

  • Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU,
until 19 September, 10 am to 6 pm.
