USING permanent hair dyes can increase your risk of developing bladder
cancer, say researchers in California.
Ronald Ross and his colleagues at the University of Southern California
School of Medicine in Los Angeles studied 897 men and women with bladder cancer
and found a threefold increase in risk among women who used permanent dyes
regularly for 15 years or more, compared with controls. What鈥檚 more,
hairdressers and barbers, who regularly handle such dyes, were five times as
likely to develop bladder cancer. But the team found no increased risk with
temporary or semi-permanent dyes (International Journal of Cancer, vol
91, p 575).
Cancer epidemiologist Tim Bishop of Leeds University says the study should be
repeated before any action is taken. 鈥淭he suggestion that these hair dyes can
increase the risk of disease doesn鈥檛 mean that it becomes a major health
