Power trip

A high-tech way to spot when trees threaten to damage power lines and start a
bush fire has been developed by the CSIRO, Australia’s national research
organisation. A plane with a camera mounted on each wing flies along the power
lines taking stereo pictures. Image-analysis software designed by Changming Sun
and his colleagues measures the distance between the power lines and the trees,
saving hours of manual inspection from the ground.
