CYCLING home from the pub might be just as dangerous as taking the car,
according to Guohua Li and his colleagues from Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore. 鈥淩iding a bike requires a higher level of psychomotor skills and
physical coordination than driving a car, so alcohol has an even stronger
effect,鈥 says Li. In a study of 466 riders, they found that having four or five
drinks made a cyclist 20 times more likely to be seriously hurt or killed
(The Journal of the American Medical Association, vol 285, p 893).
Even one drink made the journey six times more dangerous. To make matters worse,
the more the cyclists had to drink, the less likely they were to wear a
helmet.
