Germany plans to build 4000 wind turbines in the North Sea by 2030, enough to
replace 60 per cent of its current nuclear generating capacity. The massive
project is part of a plan to generate half the country鈥檚 electricity from
renewable sources by 2050, and phase out nuclear power. Environmentalists fear
the wind park will harm wildlife, but environment minister J眉rgen Trittin
points out that the two offshore sites are not in conservation areas. Germany
plans to build almost as many wind turbines on land, to boost wind power
sevenfold by 2030.
