Two vets and a farmer have been enlisted to help the Royal Society deliver a
definitive report on foot and mouth disease. 鈥淭he science is not just immunology
and virology. It bridges over into social science and economics,鈥� says Brian
Follett, the zoologist from the University of Oxford chairing the society鈥檚
15-member inquiry into the disease. Vaccination will be high on the panel鈥檚
agenda. 鈥淭he first question the government will ask us is, `What鈥檚 the status of
vaccination?鈥�,鈥� says Follett. He also wants to assess the risks that old
diseases will pop up again, such as bluetongue in cattle and Newcastle disease
in poultry.
