Feel the heat

Fill a carbon nanotube with the metal gallium and you鈥檝e got the world鈥檚
smallest thermometer鈥攁nd it鈥檚 sensitive enough to measure the tiny
temperature change when groups of molecules react, say researchers at the
National Institute for Materials Science in Ibaraki, Japan (Nature, vol
415, p 599). There鈥檚 one little drawback: you need an electron microscope to
read it.
