A NEW species of squid that grows up to 7 metres long has been discovered 4
kilometres down in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans (Science,
vol 294, p 2505). It looks different from any other known squid. 鈥淲hat鈥檚 bizarre
about these animals is the long skinny arms,鈥� says Michael Vecchione of the
National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, who reported the discovery.
Part of each arm sticks straight out to the side, with a long flexible part that
trails behind. All 10 arms look the same, unlike other squids, which have two
tentacles that look different from the eight remaining arms. Vecchione thinks
they may be related to another family called Magnapinnidae, for which
no adults have yet been found.
