Work stress

YOUR boss could be damaging your health. George Fieldman and his team at
Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College in High Wycombe tested the blood
pressure of 25 healthcare assistants who had two supervisors on alternate days
of the week. They also gave them a questionnaire to find out how they felt about
both bosses.

The assistants who had one boss they liked and one they didn鈥檛 had higher
blood pressure than a control group who had two supervisors they rated equally.
On the days they worked for a boss they dreaded their average blood pressure
jumped from 113/75 to 126/81. That鈥檚 high enough to cause a significant health
risk over time, says Fieldman.
