Ian Wilmut

Ian Wilmut, creator of Dolly the cloned sheep at Edinburgh鈥檚 Roslin
Institute, has been reading What Mad Pursuit by Francis Crick (Basic
Books, 1990). Crick and James Watson discovered the structure of DNA, and having
read Watson鈥檚 account of events surrounding the breakthrough in Genes, Girls
and Gamow
(Knopf, reviewed 24 November),
Wilmut was interested in an
alternative view of these events. He鈥檚 also been stuck into fiction and has just
finished Melvin Bragg鈥檚 The Soldier鈥檚 Return(Sceptre, 2000).
Brought up in the north of England soon after the time when the book is set, he
says it鈥檚 an era and environment that he remembers well. Another novel that
fascinates him is Enduring Love by Ian McEwan (Vintage, 1998). 鈥淗is
psychological descriptions are stunning,鈥 he says.
