Budding cyborg

Kevin Warwick, the University of Reading鈥檚 would-be cyborg, has had another implant surgically placed in his arm. Three years ago, he had a temporary implant that allowed his office to track his position. With his new one, scientists will record electrical signals from an array of 100 silicon needles that push into the median nerve in his wrist. Movement and sensations such as pain and heat should produce different signals, says Warwick. 鈥淲e鈥檙e then going to put signals into the nerves to see if we can get movement,鈥 he says. Warwick hopes the experiment will eventually help people who have lost the use of their limbs through nerve damage. 鈥淚鈥檝e also got a baseball hat fitted with ultrasonic sensors that we鈥檙e going to connect to the implant to see if I can sense distance,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t might not be much use to me but it could be useful if you were blind.鈥 Details at .
