What Evolution Is by Ernst Mayr, Weidenfeld & Nicolson
Ernst Mayr led ornithological expeditions to New Guinea in 1928. An eclipse was due, so he tried to boost his standing with the local people using a trick from Mark Twain鈥檚 A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur鈥檚 Court. Mayr said that the Moon was about to totally darken. The elderly chief said: 鈥淒on鈥檛 worry, my son, it will soon get light again.鈥 (Robert Young, Harvard Library).
