Moonstruck

The Moon Landings by Reginald Turnhill, Cambridge University Press, 拢19.95, ISBN 0521815959 Reviewed by Hazel Muir

鈥淓xploring what is going on in space must be much less fun nowadays when, if you want to find out what the Russians are doing, you just ask them!鈥 begins Reg Turnhill, a veteran space correspondent for the BBC. In The Moon Landings, he recalls with great nostalgia the excitement and intrigue of reporting on the Apollo programme at the height of the cold war. His candid and crystal-clear account does an excellent job of cutting through the political spin.

The buzz of it all still radiates from Turnhill. Aged 80, he jumped at the chance of experiencing weightlessness on a parabolic aircraft flight, commenting: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderful feeling, and I recommend it for all 80-year-olds.鈥
