Steven Weinberg

鈥淎 masterpiece,鈥 says Steven Weinberg of his latest read, Virigina Woolf鈥檚 1927 novel To the Lighthouse (Penguin, 1998). 鈥淣ot easy to read, but worth it,鈥 he says. Professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Texas at Austin, Weinberg has a book of his own, Facing Up, out in paperback this month from Harvard University Press.

He has just finished the biography Churchill, by the late Roy Jenkins (Pan, 2002). Weinberg says he never thought he could go through another account of Winston Churchill鈥檚 life, but has persevered as Jenkins didn鈥檛 shrink from being cruelly amusing about his subject鈥檚 contemporaries. 鈥淛ust what one wants in a biography,鈥 he says.
