FOLLOWING six successful years running NASA鈥檚 Astronomy Picture of the Day, or APOD, website, Robert Nemiroff and Jerry Bonnell have picked 365 of their stunningly beautiful images to produce a fat book. Each spread has a picture on the right and informative caption on the left. But what pictures these are: planets vie with galaxies; space images with colourful figures and artist鈥檚 impressions.
Each day of the year reveals a different delight, but the choice is chronologically random. I looked up 鈥渁stronomical鈥� dates such as the summer solstice, Earth鈥檚 perihelion passage, date of first lunar landing and Galileo鈥檚 birthday, but found no temporal coincidences whatsoever. What a missed opportunity.
