INSPECTORS IN IRAQ
Nuclear inspectors are set to return to the Tuwaitha nuclear complex in Iraq this week – but they are being barred by the US from checking on most of the radioactivity there. Of 70 buildings containing nuclear waste and radioactive sources, they can only inspect the four to which they have legal access under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency has become increasingly alarmed at reports of looting at Tuwaitha since the US took over the site in early April. The agency says it has a “moral responsibility” to ensure that all the radioactivity on the site is safe, but the US insists that this is its job.

Car maker Toyota is recalling all six of its hydrogen-powered electric cars after a potentially explosive leak was discovered in one of the cars’ pressurised fuel tanks during refuelling. SARS SPREADS IN CANADA
The World Health Organization has put Toronto back on its list of areas affected by the SARS virus. Earlier this month, the WHO said the virus was no longer spreading in Canada. But after more than a month in which there were no new cases, the disease resurfaced late last week, with 8 new probable cases and 26 suspected cases. They are all thought to be linked to a 96-year-old man who died recently.
