Touch screen to adjust

Ever thought the buttons on your cellphone were too small, too close together, or in the wrong place? To take account of people鈥檚 differing digits and diverse dexterities, cellphone maker Nokia is developing a phone with a touch-screen keypad that learns which 鈥渂utton鈥 layout best suits its user, and automatically adjusts it.

In a world patent application (WO 03/107168) Nokia describes software in the phone that records the key presses that are corrected by the user and the double depressions which occur when a fingertip falls between two buttons. It then uses this information to rearrange the layout of the keys, and even their shape, to make the phone easier for its owner to use.
