Treespotting

Collins Tree Guide by Owen Johnson and David More, Collins, 拢25, ISBN 0007139543 Reviewed by Roy Herbert

DAVID More鈥檚 illustrations astonish by their beauty and detail. Owen Johnson provides the steps to identifying trees in Britain and non-Mediterranean Europe.

Tree watching, the authors say, is an engrossing but under-subscribed hobby. This guide should make it more popular. Britain鈥檚 trees, for example, are far more varied than many realise. The service tree, or 鈥渃hequers鈥, has berries that taste like dates, from which you can make an alcoholic drink 鈥 hence the pub name. There鈥檚 lots more odd, interesting information here.
