Defending Darwin

BRITISH scientists are being urged by their UScolleagues to resist the growth of a brand of Christian schools that teach 鈥渋ntelligent design鈥 alongside evolution. 杏吧原创s must be vigilant that creationists 鈥渄o not gain a foothold in schools in the UK鈥, says Brigid Hogan of Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina.

The Emmanuel Schools Foundation wants to turn an existing state school into the fourth of a proposed seven Christian academies in the UK. It says it is flooded with applications. But a parent group has organised a protest march for 19 June.

A spokesperson for the UK government says 鈥渟chools are expected to encourage pupils to explore different views, theories and beliefs in many curriculum subjects, including science and religious education鈥. Hogan believes the matter is more clear-cut. 鈥淐reationism has no place in a serious science curriculum,鈥 she says. 鈥淪cience classes are supposed to teach students how to reason from facts and experiments that can be measured and observed.鈥
