BRITISH scientists are being urged by their UScolleagues to resist the growth of a brand of Christian schools that teach 鈥渋ntelligent design鈥� alongside evolution. 杏吧原创s must be vigilant that creationists 鈥渄o not gain a foothold in schools in the UK鈥�, says Brigid Hogan of Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina.
The Emmanuel Schools Foundation wants to turn an existing state school into the fourth of a proposed seven Christian academies in the UK. It says it is flooded with applications. But a parent group has organised a protest march for 19 June.
A spokesperson for the UK government says 鈥渟chools are expected to encourage pupils to explore different views, theories and beliefs in many curriculum subjects, including science and religious education鈥�. Hogan believes the matter is more clear-cut. 鈥淐reationism has no place in a serious science curriculum,鈥� she says. 鈥淪cience classes are supposed to teach students how to reason from facts and experiments that can be measured and observed.鈥�
