THIS weighty, costly dictionary of sci-fi is more likely to find a home in a reference library or on a literary critic鈥檚 bookshelf than on the average aficionado鈥檚 coffee table. However, it does a thorough job of tracking the development of 鈥渟peculative fiction鈥 from the 18th century to the present.
A scholarly introduction, a chronology and a well-researched bibliography support short entries on individual authors and thematic articles similar to those in The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (Orbit, 1993), which this complements rather than replaces.
