BE careful when reading this book. I found myself wandering blindfold around the house testing out my echolocating abilities, leaping around the kitchen to prove that the clock on the microwave really does seem to stand still if I turn my head quickly enough, and staring out strangers at traffic lights to see if they really would accelerate away from me on the green light. It was reassuring to learn, though, that there is a physiological basis for my inability to put my card into an ATM correctly, and to discover that I have more friends than I thought.
This small volume is a real treat if you are interested in the science behind familiar everyday experiences. But, be warned: life really does speed up as we get older. So I am off to practise my stone skimming to reach the theoretical maximum of 38 bounces while there is still time.
