James Lovelock’s Gaia: Medicine for an ailing planet (Gaia, £15.99) offers a way of taking the temperature of the whole planetary system. His outlook is grim. He proposes that to avoid disaster we must adopt the best of technology and bend our minds to halting and reversing the effects of global warming – now. We should synthesise food to give the earth a rest and use nuclear power for clean energy: he is as provocative as ever.
