Foot powder

On a recent trip to New Zealand, we found that a bright red powder formed in footprints and tyre tracks (see below) on the beach near where we were staying. The powder was so fine that if you blew on it, it made a fine red mist in the air and disappeared. None of the locals seemed to know what it was. Can anybody else explain?
