Talking heads may replace texts

Textaholics may soon be able to send an animated photo of themselves to speak their message to the recipient

DON鈥橳 send text messages, send talking photos instead.

Seestorm, a Russian company based in Moscow, has devised a way to allow phone owners to take a picture of themselves using a cellphone camera, and then attach a voice or text message to the file. The person they are calling receives an animated version of the picture in which the caller鈥檚 eyes and mouth move as they appear to speak the message.

The company uses software on its servers to slice up the message into its component phonemes and then match these to mouth and eye movements in its library.

It is not as realistic as a video of the person talking, but at just 100 kilobytes the file is much smaller and costs just three times as much as an ordinary SMS message to send. Seestorm is offering the service on videophones in the UK, Germany, Asia and North America.
