鈥淎DULT鈥� websites are to be given their own .xxx domain, which should allow pornographers to promote themselves more easily to customers, while protecting others from accidentally accessing porn online. But it could lead to more, not less scandal.
While some hope the move will establish a virtual border around 鈥渁dult鈥� websites and make it easier to filter out explicit content before it reaches children, others say it will trigger a scramble for lucrative web addresses and legal disputes between porn sites.
What鈥檚 more, the scheme is voluntary, meaning porn sites will still exist outside the cordon. And the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which oversees domain names, says anyone, whether they are providers of porn or not, can buy a .xxx address for around $60.
