Can鈥檛 wait for Apple to produce an iPod that plays videos? You don鈥檛 have to. The Linux open-source movement has created proof-of-concept software that can run videos on most iPods, provided the video files have first been uncompressed. Using uncompressed files enables the program to convert the proportions of the video frame to match the iPod鈥檚 low-resolution screen, say the developers.
An electric motor that can outperform a Ferrari engine has revved into life. The motor is capable of 2500 revs per minute, has no gears and uses a unique design of brushless rotor rather than permanent magnets, claims the engineering firm that has invented it, IMP of Neath, UK. Size for size, it produces 400 times more torque than any existing motor, the firm says.

South Korean mobile phone maker SK Telecom has built a digital picture frame containing a liquid crystal display that can receive picture files uploaded from cellphones. It was unveiled at the Smart Home and Home Network Show 2005 in South Korea which ran from 2 to 5 June.
