A LOT of objectors are not going to be happy. But on Tuesday the European Court of Justice upheld a law blocking the sale of products containing 鈥渕egadoses鈥 of vitamins and minerals across the European Union.
Dieticians and mainstream consumer groups have welcomed the decision. 鈥淐ontrary to the many misleading reports, the directive is not anti-consumer choice,鈥 says UK consumer organisation Which?. 鈥淚t will ensure that products are safe.鈥
Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George鈥檚 Hospital in London, agrees. 鈥淭hese are not sweets,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have any long-term data on the safety of large doses, or any way of monitoring and recording adverse reactions.鈥 She says she sees half a dozen patients a year suffering from adverse reactions to megadoses of vitamins, most often diarrhoea.
