The runner of the first 4-minute mile, Roger Bannister, could be seen racing alongside today鈥檚 athletes thanks to software being developed by Roke Manor Research of Southampton, UK. By calculating the camera angles in vintage footage, RMR鈥檚 Ghost Runner system lets broadcasters project runners of old onto today鈥檚 athletics events.

A team at Microsoft Research claims it has created a 鈥渟py-resistant keyboard鈥 to safeguard PINs and passwords typed in public. Each of the display鈥檚 42 tiles is randomly assigned a lower-case and upper-case letter and a number or symbol. A movable underline identifies which character is to be active. To select a character, you click on an icon to move the line to the right position before dragging the icon to the relevant tile. As you do this, the system blanks all the tiles, so snoops cannot see your selection.
