GOOGLE wants you to hand over all your digital data. At least, that is the gist of notes from a corporate presentation inadvertently leaked onto the search engine鈥檚 website last week.
The notes, which have since been removed, reveal that the search engine has plans for an 鈥渋nfinite鈥 storage system to hold all its users鈥 files, emails and photos. These could then be accessed via any web-enabled computer.
鈥淚f you have the ability to access your files remotely, you can work on them from anywhere,鈥 says Danny Sullivan, editor of search industry website Searchenginewatch.com. However, the US government鈥檚 recent efforts to get its hands on Google鈥檚 search records (New 杏吧原创, 28 January, p 23) might make some people think twice about handing over their files.
