Nuclear power for China

The China National Nuclear Corporation announced on Sunday that it intends to build 28 new nuclear power stations over the next 14 years. The Xinhua news agency reported the plans to increase the generating capacity of nuclear power stations to 40 gigawatts, 4 per cent of the nation鈥檚 total, by 2020.

Abortion battle

South Dakota could become a testing ground for some of the most stringent restrictions on abortion since the practice was legalised in the US 33 years ago. Planned legislation would make it illegal for doctors to carry out an abortion even if the woman was pregnant through rape or incest, or if giving birth would damage her health.

Risky manoeuvre

After travelling 459 million kilometres since its launch in August 2005, NASA鈥檚 Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will enter orbit around the Red Planet on 10 March. It鈥檚 a very risky stage of the mission. 鈥淲e鈥檙e starting to enter into the realm where we鈥檝e lost two spacecraft in 15 years,鈥 says James Graf, the mission鈥檚 project manager.

Goat drug rejected

THE world鈥檚 first medicine extracted from the milk of genetically engineered animals has suffered a setback. European authorities last week withheld approval for ATryn, a human form of the clot-busting protein antithrombin extracted from goats鈥 milk, citing insufficient clinical data. Its manufacturers plan to appeal against the decision.

A date for carbon

Stop Climate Chaos, a coalition of the UK鈥檚 leading climate change campaigners, hosted a 鈥渃arbon speed dating鈥 event on Wednesday designed to put pressure on the government to introduce a legally binding carbon budget. Some 70 politicians rotated around 鈥渄ating鈥 tables where they listened to the concerns of about 700 SCC supporters.
