‘Unrealistic expectations’ to blame for home network problems

Intel says householders should not expect electronic equipment such as MP3 players, network TVs and Wi-Fi routers to be compatible

THE nightmares people experience when trying to network their homes are not the fault of the equipment makers. On the contrary, says Intel, it鈥檚 homeowners鈥 unrealistic expectations that are to blame.

It sounds arrogant, but Bill Schilit of Intel鈥檚 usability lab in Santa Clara, California, is adamant. He has found that people trying to network TVs, VoIP phones, PCs, Wi-Fi routers and MP3 hi-fi systems often expect systems from different firms to work seamlessly together. That, he says, is too much to expect. Now he tells us.

Schilit blames 鈥渆ver-increasing improvements鈥 to technology for introducing incompatibilities as gadgets are upgraded. He hopes an industry group called the Digital Living Network Alliance can iron out the conflicts.
