Jung’s effects go under the hammer

Intimate letters and key manuscripts by Carl Jung, one of the foremost psychologists and thinkers of the 20th century, are up for auction

INTIMATE letters and key manuscripts by Carl Jung, one of the foremost psychologists and thinkers of the 20th century, are up for auction on 8 June in London.

鈥淭hey are quite sensational,鈥 says John Arthur, the specialist handling the sale at auctioneers Sotheby鈥檚. Jung, who coined the terms extrovert and introvert, was seen as the successor to Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis.

Many of the items on offer concern Jung鈥檚 pioneering work on the analysis of dreams and the existence of a 鈥渃ollective unconscious鈥, including a lecture transcript rejecting Freud鈥檚 obsession with sex as the sole motivation for human behaviour.

Eight of the letters on sale are from Jung to Christiana Morgan, the woman whose trance-like recollections of dreams were central to his ideas on the unconscious. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e not exactly love letters, but are as close as you can get,鈥 says Arthur. Some of the individual lots are expected to reach up to 拢60,000 each.
