IT LOOKS rather like a flying whale, and its developers claim it will provide a low-cost, efficient way of transporting goods, particularly in countries with poor infrastructure.
Dynalifter, a cross between an airship and an aircraft, is due for its maiden test launch over Ohio this summer. Developed by Robert Rist and Brian Martin of Ohio Airships in Mantua, it flies using a combination of buoyancy and aerodynamic lift.
The craft consists of a large helium balloon with wings and a tail supported by a rigid structure inside. Although it is heavier than air and will take-off and land on a runway, a large part of its weight is offset by the helium, so it will fly more efficiently and be able to use smaller airstrips than other aircraft of similar load capacity, the company claims.
