Not scared? we’ll try harder then

If a theme park ride is not thrilling enough for you, it could soon be cranked up a notch, thanks to a wearable sensor setup

IF A theme park ride isn鈥檛 scary enough for you, it could soon be cranked up a notch, according to Brendan Walker, curator of the Thrill Laboratory exhibit, which opens at London鈥檚 Science Museum on 17 October.

Volunteers will be hooked up to an accelerometer to measure the g-forces acting on them and an ECG to measure their pulse, while a helmet-mounted camera will film their facial expressions. Data from these sensors will be beamed wirelessly for analysis as the volunteers are hurled around the rides, and the scariness adjusted accordingly.

鈥淓ventually we hope to allow rides to speed up or slow down in real time according to the thrill levels being experienced,鈥 Walker says. 鈥淭he fairground showman used to decide what makes a good time. Now it鈥檚 computer programmers who will decide.鈥
