Genesis Machines, by Martyn Amos

THERE are some things silicon-based computing will never manage, which is why a much older computing success story is getting lots of attention. For billions of years, biological systems made from DNA and proteins have successfully calculated their way through the world. Using biology to design our own 鈥渨etware鈥 could allow us to compute in places silicon won鈥檛 go. The pay-offs, for example in medicine, could be considerable. Here Martyn Amos, recipient of the world鈥檚 first PhD in DNA computing, explains the fundamentals of the field and looks to the future.
