THE results of a massive study 鈥渂ased on a total of 29,217 person-years of experience鈥 into the effect of a cholesterol-lowering diet on deaths from coronary heart disease have just been published in The Lancet (21 Oct, p 835). The Helsinki group responsible for the survey, conducted in two mental hospitals over a 12-year period, is regarded as among the best of the several teams involved in long-term investigations of the effect of diet on heart disease. The new results from Helsinki go a long way toward finally clinching the argument that the risk of death from coronary heart disease in men can be significantly lowered 鈥 in fact in the present study, just about halved 鈥 by the adoption of simple dietary precautions. Moreover, the study lays the unpleasant ghost conjured up last year that a diet aimed at preventing heart disease simply increases the risk of death from cancer.
