Finger clickin’ good

What makes the noise when you click your fingers?

• A little experimentation provides the answer. The sound is made not when your middle finger slides against the tip of your thumb, but when it smacks into the base of your thumb an instant later. This can be verified by trying to click your fingers while wearing fingerless mittens – you only get a muffled thudding sound.
