A nanoscale freight train has hauled a gold nugget 0.5 micrometres (Science, ). It is made from two nested nanotubes. The inner tube acts as a rail for the gold-carrying outer tube, which is 200 nanometres long and slides along in response to an electric current. The train, built partially at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology in Barcelona, Spain, could form part of a nanoscale assembly line.
