What nature could teach America about cybersecurity

A new report is strangely silent on the problem of software monoculture

鈥淚N CYBERSPACE, the war has begun.鈥 That is what the US , a group that has the president-elect鈥檚 ear, was told by one of its respondents.

Set up because of fears that a cyber-attack could bring the nation to its knees, the commission this week released its recommendations. The report recalls the UK鈥檚 struggle during the second world war to decrypt Nazi communications, explaining the US is now in a similar situation 鈥渂ut not playing the role of the British鈥.

Government and company networks are being routinely subjected to attacks. Redesigning outdated infrastructure, reorganisation and a 鈥渃yber czar鈥 are among the commission鈥檚 recommendations to try to prevent them.

It also calls for a 鈥渉olistic鈥 approach. So why not look to the ultimate in holism, nature itself? Earth relies on myriad ecosystems to cope with diverse threats, yet when it comes to software, protocols and operating systems the world is virtually a monoculture. Motley cyber environments would limit the fallout from a major attack. Let diversity flourish in the name of cybersecurity.
