Airbus wants to make its passenger jets bulletproof. To help keep cabin temperatures acceptable and engine noise down, the space between the skin of a jet and its interior wall is stuffed with fire-retarding fibrous insulation. Airbus France is applying for a US patent () on bulletproofing walls next to crew, passengers and flight-critical systems by replacing this insulation with overlapping mats of a fibre like Kevlar.
