In a recent conversation about food chains, a colleague wondered if anything ate wasps. Someone suggested 鈥渧ery stupid birds鈥�. Does anyone know any more about this?

鈥� You may be interested in some photos I took in my garden in Melbourne in April 2007. They show conclusively that praying mantises eat at least the heads of European wasps: the photo above shows the predator sucking up the wasp鈥檚 brain before cleaning itself.

I did not see the mantis eat any of the wasp鈥檚 body. It left it behind, but I didn鈥檛 see whether it did so on purpose or dropped it accidentally.
