The climate summit that’s more important than the G20

The real business on tackling climate change is going on in Germany this week

WHILE eyes are on the G20 summit in London, this week鈥檚 serious business on climate change is being done in Germany.

The latest round of UN-backed talks aiming at a replacement for the Kyoto protocol began in Bonn on Monday. Delegates heard the chief US climate negotiator, Todd Stern, declare his country鈥檚 re-engagement. 鈥淲e do not doubt the science, we do not doubt the urgency, and we do not doubt the enormity of the challenge before us,鈥 Stern said. 鈥淭he facts on the ground are outstripping the worst-case scenarios. The costs of inaction 鈥 or inadequate actions 鈥 are unacceptable.鈥

Climate change talks between the G20 leaders are not expected to produce more than a bland statement 鈥 perhaps a pledge to create 鈥済reen jobs鈥 as part of a package to stimulate the global economy.
