Maker Faire: From icy love to electrical Play-Doh

The World Maker Faire in New York last weekend showcased a range of curious inventions, such as a suit that helps you hug a glacier

FORGET jackets that hug your figure: the latest in outerwear cool is a jacket that lets you hug a glacier.

The Glacier Embracing Suit is the brainchild of , a researcher and inventor at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada. It was just one of the inventions presented at the in New York last weekend.

The glacier suit is made of heat-reflecting fabric and is worn over your clothes. Hartman says she came up with the idea while researching for what she describes a better 鈥済lacier-human communication techniques鈥. 鈥淭here鈥檚 no social protocol for what to do when you meet a glacier,鈥 she says.

The concept might sound eccentric, but it embraces the philosophy of the Maker Faire: if you can imagine it, you can make it. The event, run by Make magazine and first held in 2006, brings together all manner of creative enthusiasts 鈥 from scientists and engineers to artists.

With over 500 exhibits to choose from, visitors were able to meet a robot that can solve a Rubik鈥檚 cube, find out how to build an airplane from junk, and turn a typewriter into an iPad keyboard.
