Top tip: it’s a small (to medium) world after all

Every science graduate is aware of the graduate schemes in big pharma, engineering, IT and so on, and they are certainly worth pursuing. But everyone wants them, and in today鈥檚 oversubscribed job market, everyone鈥檚 chances of a successful application are reduced.

鈥淚f you鈥檝e applied for dozens of big schemes but are getting nowhere, change tack and start sniffing out small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),鈥 says Tanya de Grunwald of GraduateFog.co.uk. 鈥淯se the industry press to find out which small companies are growing fast 鈥 they鈥檙e the most likely to be hiring. Fewer people apply to them, and you鈥檙e likely to get a friendlier response.鈥

The culture of most SMEs is for everybody to muck in, so if you get the job, you are likely to carry out more varied work, she adds, which is good news for those who haven鈥檛 decided where their strengths lie. 鈥淎t this stage of your career, nothing is set in stone.鈥
